I was walking out to my car
this evening when I saw and heard this bright orange Fiero pull into the lot. It did not sound like any Fiero I’d ever heard. I waited til the guy got out and I complimented him on the car. Then I asked about the throaty burble coming from the exhaust. He said, “Yeah, it’s got a 350 V8 in it.” I said, “Well, since that car weighs about 27 pounds, I bet it gets down the road.” He laughed and said, “It weighs a bit more, but yeah, it goes.” He was probably my age (50s), and was wearing some sort of car shirt. So he likely put the motor in himself. Note the “350" badge on the back.

The back of the Fiero is everything cool about 80s design.

I am not an expert on fiero engine swaps, but I think in some respects a 350 swap may be more involved than some others . So many hot rods of the classic age get a smallblock and turbo-hydramatic swap as quickly as blinking, but the config of the Fiero means most swaps I’ve heard about are from FWD drivetrains.
Northstar, Olds Toronado, and so on are what I understand as common. I don’t think the 3800 v6 can be replaced that readily with a smallblock in place, but I could be wrong. Probably some adapters exist, and if cutting was required, I’m sure he did it.

I saw this particularly nice one the other day. I like these cars.

Lt1 Fi eros were a fairly common swap apparently, and I have forever wanted a Fiero GT with 8 cylinders directly behind me. They may have been oft derided, but I can't help but believe that it would be simply incredible.

Oh man, that must be wicked!

I don’t know much about these swaps
either, but
FWIW
the ride height
looks good
from here. I assume that among all the work it took to swap the engine over
, h
e must’ve done something right with
t
he suspension as well. Very nice.

There’s one on the local CL here with a Northstar 4.6 swap.

It was definitely lowered. Looked great, and I don’t like lowered cars.

The Fiero is actually relatively heavy for an 80s two-seater at around 2600 lbs. The CRX is a common comparison at around 1800-2000 lbs depending on year and trim level. But the most direct competitor, the MR2, i s actually in the same ballpark at around 2400 lbs.

I knew it would be tight if it went in 1:1. Looks like it is *incredibly* tight... but not a whole drivetrain swap . Nice.

I actually saw three Fieros on the road yesterday. I can’t even remember the last time I saw three in the same week.
The way one of them attacked a highway on-ramp left no doubt it wasn’t stock.

There are several kit for a 350 swap. I’ve read that it’s easier than it sounds.

From the pictures, it looked like the hilariously tight clearance on the right to the strut tower was managed by a few degrees of cant around the crank axis. What I was expecting, a tight clearance to the transaxle itself due to the 3800 being narrower, appears not to be an issue.

It can’t be much worse than the Boxter, or any modern SUV for that matter. Spark plugs on an Explorer? Time to drop the engine out....

Ike was telling me a Fiero horror story at the oppo meet, about a Fiero with rusted spark plugs and a rusted mount bolt, which meant he had to pull the whole back apart. I don't think he'd have been safe even then on a 350 swap.
